Myzone is the answer!
At Everybody’s Fitness Center, you have the opportunity to take advantage of a program called Myzone. Myzone is a small heart rate monitor that you can use to track your exercise. This device, which can be connected to an application on your smartphone or the television in one of our gyms, can also keep track of the number of calories that you burn in a session, with a 99.4% accuracy rate, comparable to an EKG machine. All you have to do is download the application, input information such as your height, weight, and age, and begin your workout!
By using Myzone, you can get real-time updates on the intensity of your workout and be able to record and document each trip to the gym as well as any other activity you do outside of the gym. The waterproof heart rate monitor is worn on a strap and should be placed right under your chest (for women: it would go directly below the sports bra). As you begin your workout, your heart rate will be displayed on the Myzone application or TV screen, alongside a corresponding color. These colors show the amount of “intensity” you are exhibiting. Grey is 50-59% of your maximum heart rate (MHR), blue is 60-69% of your MHR, green is 70-79% of your MHR, yellow is 80-89% of your MHR, and red is 90-100% of your MHR.
As one can infer, these colors are a great way to help in pacing your workout, particularly regarding cardiovascular exercises like running or cycling. You may find that your heart rate is grey during your warm-up and hovers between blue and green during your actual workout. If you start to overexert yourself, and your Myzone turns red, it is likely an indicator that you need to slow down or take a rest.
The reverse is also true with this device. You may realize you are not working as hard as you thought as you see you are in the grey or blue zone for too long when you should be in the green or yellow. So, this will help to motivate you to increase your intensity. The benefit? You will see better results in your training, conditioning and strength.
Myzone can also be used as a wonderful social tool, and as a way to build community within a group class. You can add your friends on the application and check up on their workouts and progress or even create challenges. You can also all connect your Myzone to the TV screens at the same time, and compete with one another. At EFC, we use Myzone in various settings, such as the cycling classes at our Auburn location or during one on one or small group training with our Personal Trainers.
