5 Ways to Destress from Back-to-School Mayhem
Sometimes back to school season means full-on STRESS for working parents! Mountain-of-a-mole-hill spending on school supplies, Iron Chef worthy 3-course lunch meals, loading up the *smelly* kids to and from never ending soccer practice, schedule gaps... gaps in SANITY for that matter.
Sound familiar? Let's focus on de-stressing from the madness and mayhem of back to school season, one step at a time. Here are 5 simple ways to get you de-stressed and relaxed in no time!
1.) Take a deep breath
It's so easy to get caught up in the rush of our daily schedules that we forget to take time for ourselves. The first step to managing stress is to recognize how you're feeling, understanding that it's NORMAL, and take a nice big breath. It's okay to feel a little frazzled, but first we need to accept it and r-e-l-a-x. When you hit peak stress, just step aside and focus on taking deep, relaxed breaths.
It's okay if the kid's shoes don't match, it's okay if chicken nuggets are what's for lunch instead of star shaped peanut butter and jelly, it's okay that you haven't washed your hair in 4 days, who doesn't love a good dry shampoo?
2.) Making eating balanced meals a priority
When we rush through our days with bigger fish to fry than eating a kale salad, eating healthy is usually thrown on the back burner. But, not fueling your body with nutrition is only going make you feel sluggish and rundown from the inside-out. Now you don't have to go full on green juice cleanse, just keep it simple - less junk food, more goodness - color, fiber, protein.
3.) Exercise
You knew this one was coming! Don't roll your eyes, it's true! Getting just 30 minutes of rigorous activity a day has been proven to lower stress levels on a biochemical level (getting all sciencey now).* Exercise literally lowers your body's production of stress hormones! It even stimulates the production of endorphins, which naturally boost your mood and even relieve pain. Pretty cool huh?
4.) Do something you love
Don't forget to take time for yourself, even if you can only fit in 15 minutes a day, it will make a big difference. I don't mean going through your emails for 15 minutes, I mean completely unplugged, undivided attention kind of focus on doing something you just totally love! Take your dog for a walk in the park, read some of your favorite book, cook YOUR favorite meal, paint by number - who cares! As long as it makes you happy, make time for it everyday.
5.) Get organized
Failing to prepare equals preparing to fail. I don't know about you, but when I let my stress pile up, I reach a point where all my energy has been spent on just trying to scramble, and I don't have energy left to be my best self! But, if I take time to get organized, and practice the above stress relievers regularly, I don't have to reach the point of letting my stress pile up.
I know that's easier said than done, but keeping yourself organized and knowing your priorities will give you the security of knowing you have structure and control over your life. Invest in a great planner or journal, and write out your goals, your schedule, your daily tasks, and cross them off as you do them. Visually seeing how you're killin' your day will give you the motivation to power through, and the satisfaction of getting your goals accomplished.
