"Discover The 3 Major Effects that Stress Has On Your Health and How to Get Rid of it for Good..."
Have you ever heard someone say, "This stress is going to kill me!"? They're right.
In fact, 75 to 90% of Doctors Visits are from Stress Related Ailments
Maybe you can relate to a day like this...
Your alarm clock goes off late cause the power went out last night.
You look at the clock and begin to freak out.
You're supposed to be at work in 10 minutes to give an important presentation to your boss.
You jump out of bed, trip across the floor and stub your toe on your dresser.
On your way to work you get stuck behind a slow driver.
Walking into the office someone bumps you and your coffee spills all over your nice pressed shirt.
GREAT!!
Not only are you late for the big presentation but you now look like a slob with a big glaring coffee stain.
You muddle thru the presentation and think well my day can only get better from here.
Then your boss throws a big stack of work on your desk that needs to be done before you go home.
You skip lunch trying to finish everything when the phone rings and it’s the bill collectors again looking for your car payment.
You promise to make a small payment as soon as possible.
Then you look out the window and your car is being towed away.
You get a ride home from a co-worker, walk thru the door to find “snow” all over your living room.
Your cute and adorable dog has decided to use your couch as its new chew toy. REALLY?
You have an awful headache, your heart is racing and won’t slow down.
Plus that pain you have off and on in the back of your shoulders is coming back.
You think, "my life stinks and the stress is going to kill me!"
Then you grab a pint of your favorite ice-cream and sit down for supper. :-)
Ok ok ok...
...so maybe you haven’t had that exact day, but something similar I'm sure.
And sadly, many of us have a toned down version of this day most days of the week.
You may have even thought to yourself, “the stress of X is going to kill me?”
Well you may actually be right.
The stress itself won’t kill you but the effects of chronic stress on your health can be detrimental.
Did you know that some sources show that 43% of all adults suffer from the adverse effects of stress and that 75% - 90% of all doctor’s visits are for stress related ailments?
So what exactly is stress?
Stress is your body’s reaction to either a physical, mental, emotional factor or change that requires an adjustment or response whether it be real or perceived.
Many things can trigger this reaction whether it is positive or negative and they can be different for all people. When you are faced with this factor your brain starts a series of events within your body which includes the release of certain hormones including adrenaline and cortisol.
The adrenaline increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure and boosts energy supplies. While the cortisol increases sugar levels in your bloodstream.
This is a good thing when you are faced with a threat as this heightens your fight or flight response to keep you safe from danger.
Once the threat has passed then the body should return to normal and your heart rate and blood pressure would return to normal levels for your body.
However, when stressors are always present in your life then your stress hormones are constantly turned on and this my friend is NOT GOOD.
The major types of stress that are not good for our health are:
- Routine stress related to your family, work or
other daily responsibilities
- Sudden negative changes in our lives like a
major illness, divorce, or death
- Traumatic stress which occurs in events like a
car accident, war, or being faced by an intruder
So why is all of this bad?
Well when you are under constant stress, i.e. chronic stress, you will be over exposed to cortisol...
...and other stress hormones which can then disrupt your body’s normal processes and lead to all sorts of health issues.
Since everyone reacts differently to different stressors, the resultant health issues can be different.
One may have a headache while another may have digestive issues.
Also, people under a lot of stress will become susceptible to things like more frequent colds, the flu or other viral infections.
The real issue comes when the stress becomes chronic and over time this will lead to more serious health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, or even diabetesThe main 3 health issues chronic stress can cause are as follows…
- Physically –
headaches, muscle tension or pain,
chest pain, heart attack, stroke, fatigue, change in sex drive, upset stomach,
increase intensity of heartburn pain, skin conditions, asthma, and sleep
problems
- Emotionally
– anxiety, restlessness, lack of
motivation or focus, irritability or anger, and sadness or depression
- Behaviorally
– overeating or undereating, angry
outbursts, drug or alcohol abuse, tobacco use, or social withdrawal
So enough bad news, here's the good news...
You can do things to help relieve chronic stress and avoid or at least reduce your risk of stress related health issues.
I strongly suggest you try at least one of the following and maybe you won’t have to be a part of that statistic about going to the doctor….
- Exercise regularly at least 30 minutes a day,
this can be the gym, a walk outside, a jog or bike ride, etc. It is proven that
exercise will help boost your mood and reduce stress.
- Incorporate yoga, tai chi or some sort of meditation
into your daily routine
- Stay in touch with people who can provide you
with emotional and other support. This needs to be positive emotional support,
not someone who will just join in with your negative rants and keep them going.
- Be aware of your body! You need to recognize
your body’s response to stress such as difficulty sleeping, over or under
eating, low energy, depression etc.
- Set priorities – decide what is truly important
and needs to get done first and what can wait.
- Learn to say no to people, you don’t always have
to say yes, if you don’t have the time to take on a new task then say NO!
- Note what you have accomplished at the end of
each day and focus on that, not what you weren’t able to get to. As I always
like to say, give yourself a high-five for what you did do.
- Get 7 – 8 hours of sleep
- Eat a healthy, BALANCED
meal. If your body is deficient in ANY
nutrient this also wreaks havoc on your entire system.
- Avoid excess caffeine and alcohol intake
- Learn to laugh!
Even if you don’t think stress bothers you but...
...you have been dealing with some sort of ache/pain or are always coming down with some illness.
There's a high probability that you really may be suffering from the effects of chronic stress.
I want you to try a least one of the above suggestions and see what happens.
The payoff to dealing with stress is HUGE!!
You will gain peace of mind, begin to feel better and perhaps live a longer, healthier life!
If you chose exercise or yoga as your way to cope and are not sure where to start...
