Exercising on Vacation
Tips on how to stay fit while on vacation
During the summer season, you may find that it is difficult to fit your usual exercise routine into barbecues, day trips, or longer vacations you want to take. Although I am a firm believer in the influence of giving your muscles and body a chance to properly rest and relax, you may also want to incorporate some at-home or at-hotel movement sessions. If you are looking for any fitness-friendly vacation ideas or inspiration, please check my recent blog post: https://www.efcfit.com/fitness-friendly-vacations-and-day-trips
There are a number of bodyweight exercises that you can do essentially anywhere. Some of my favorites are:
·Planks
·Push-ups (you can put your hands on a chair, the side of a counter, etc to do incline push-ups, which are easier than push-ups on the floor)
·Bear crawls (from this position, you could choose to hold in place or move forward and backward)
·Squats (can also be done holding a weight in front of you or overhead)
·Lunges (walking or in place)
·Step-ups (onto a ledge or stairs)
If you decide to bring some resistance bands with you, you could also consider the following movements:
·Monster walks
·Banded squats (with the band above your knees, focus on keeping tension on the band the whole time)
·Band pull-aparts
·Rows, I-T-Ys (If you find something to tie the band to)
If you prefer to take guided classes rather than workout on your own, there are so many wonderful resources on websites like Youtube. You can find tutorials for almost any type of exercise, including yoga, different styles of dance, and weightlifting. When you are looking for information, though, make sure that it is from a reputable, properly educated source such as a physical therapist or doctor. There are even a number of licensed professionals creating amazing content on Instagram. Here are a few of my favorite accounts:

If none of this sounds particularly appealing, or if you are going to a place that internet is not very accessible, you can always keep it simple. Walking, hiking, and swimming are all wonderful, casual ways of both moving your body and experiencing the world around us. You do not need to undergo strenuous exercise every single day in order to maintain your health and fitness. Most importantly, you should be enjoying your vacation. If you are spending your time off worrying about your body or stressing about finding time to exercise, it is difficult to properly relax. Prioritize the time you can spend with loved ones, first and foremost - the gym will still be there when you come home!
