Fitness Friendly Vacations and Day Trips
As the warm weather (finally) arrives, you may find yourself and your family itching to get outside. Whether or not you recently began a fitness and health journey, or have been consistently exercising for years, it can be difficult to find fun day trip or vacation destinations that are suited for an active lifestyle. The following list will provide a number of locations that are in or are easily accessible from central Massachusetts.
Watch Hill / Misquamicut Beach
72 miles from Auburn
1 hour, 20 minutes drive

This small town in Rhode Island was one of my absolute favorite places to go as a kid. My parents and my sister and I would first stop at Watch Hill for lunch and an obligatory scoop of homemade ice cream. Afterwards, we would spend the rest of the day at Misquamicut Beach getting knocked around in the tall waves of the Atlantic Ocean. We were all happily exhausted when it was time to go home.
Walden Pond
44 miles from Auburn
48 minutes drive

In the mid-1800’s, Henry David Thoreau lived at Walden Pond for over two years. This beautiful scenery even inspired his novel, Walden. There are numerous hiking trails here, including a 1.7 mile trail that goes right around the pond.
Ramblewild Adventure Park
113 miles from Auburn
1 hour, 51 minutes drive

At this elevated ropes-based aerial park, every member of your family would likely find a course that suits their abilities and comfort level. Be sure to check their age, height, and health restrictions before planning your trip.
Purgatory Chasm State Reservation
9 miles from Auburn
20 minutes drive
https://www.mass.gov/locations/purgatory-chasm-state-reservation
Many of my friends consider this hike to be one of their very favorite in the area. At Purgatory Chasm, you can hike, rock climb, and even explore caves, if you are up for a challenge.
Cape Cod Inflatable Park
111 miles from Auburn
1 hour, 48 minutes drive

The Cape Cod Inflatable Park features wet and dry inflatable parks, a circus-inspired obstacle course, a water park, and an arcade. This place would be incredible for families with both young and older children, as there would be options for those of any age.
Kimball Farm
37 miles from Auburn
42 minutes drive
Although Kimball Farm is known for its ice cream, it also has a number of other active attractions like bumper cars, mini and regular golf, batting cages, and even a zip line. Their Outback Tap Shack even offers “lighter” food options, providing alternatives to their typical fried food.
Tower Hill Botanic Garden
16 miles from Auburn
22 minutes drive
Tower Hill Botanic Garden, located outside of Worcester, has an incredible calendar of events throughout the summer. They even have free admission after 3 P.M. on Thursdays! At their lunchtime restaurant, Farmer and the Fork, visitors can enjoy healthy, farm-fresh, meals cooked with local produce.
Wachusett Dam
20 miles from Auburn
26 minutes drive
https://www.mass.gov/locations/wachusett-reservoir
The Wachusett Dam is a wonderful spot for both fishing and hiking. There are even two staircases, with 150 and 200 stairs respectively, that you could climb for a quick workout. Why not go for a hike, finish with stair sprints, and have a picnic in the grass?
AllTrails App for Hiking
Personally, I swear by this app and have recommended it to a number of my friends and clients. After you allow the app to track your location through GPS, it will suggest a number of hikes close to you. I have found countless hidden gems only a four minute drive from the EFC in Sturbridge, and 10 minutes from my house off of Main Street in Worcester.
