I Exercise So Why Can’t I Lose Weight?
Have you been trying all crazy new exercise routines and sweating your butt off on some cardio machine in order to lose weight...
...but regardless of all of your efforts you still weigh the same?
This used to be me so I get it.
Before I became a personal trainer I worked in the corporate world for 15 years, sitting at a desk for a minimum of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
I have, however, always loved to exercise so I have been doing it for many years.
I did go through many stages though.
There was high school, had to exercise to try and look as pretty as the popular cheerleaders or all the models in the teen magazines.
Then on to college where I was absolutely determined not to gain the freshman 15.
Next was attending weddings
including my own where I wanted to look great in my dress.
After the wedding I had kids so had to lose the baby weight and on and on.
Now back to the 15 years in the corporate world. I started to gain more weight even though I was still continuing to exercise.
I thought, oh well I guess my hips and thighs are just this size and I can never get them smaller no matter what I do.
I was exercising 5 days a week at nights and then I would always go for a walk or jog during my lunch breaks at work.
However, during this time I was also always stopping at Dunkin Donuts every morning to get a coffee and my breakfast of a coffee cake muffin.
I thought I could eat this junk because I was working out...plus I walk at lunch.
On top of the muffins I also ate my fair share of...
- Large Pizzas
- French Fries
- Soda
- Cheesy Pasta
- Potato Skins...loaded with cream cheese
I could do that though because I worked out all the time...
...and remember my hips and thighs were as small as they were ever going to get, or so I thought.
When I began studying to become a personal trainer I included a lot of nutrition in my studies.
I learned just how the body works and what foods it needs to run in a healthy way.
At this time I will also admit to you that I tried all crazy fad diets throughout my life...
...like drinking crazy diet shakes instead of real food, purging, cutting out fat, and does anyone remember the cabbage diet?
Gross!
Guess what...none of them worked or at least only for a couple of weeks then any weight lost came right back.
When I learned how the body actually functions and that it needs...
- Lean Protein
- Carbohydrates
- And yes Fat (healthy omegas) to function
...I changed my tune on what I ate.
I also learned proper portions and proper timing of food intake.
Believe me when I tell you it was a slow work in process but I did it the right way and it stuck.
I no longer eat or even crave some of the foods I used to eat.
Do I spurge once in a while, of course but I know what to do now when this happens.
But the good news is I have learned that my hips and thighs could actually get smaller.
I am proud to say I weigh less now in my forties than I did in my twenties. I have learned the hard way that you can’t out train a bad diet.
Let me repeat that...
“ You can’t out train a bad diet!”
So the next time you sweat your butt off on a cardio machine...
...don’t throw all of that awesome hard work out the window by eating wrong or too much or in some cases believe it or not too little.
The hard part, I know, is trying to figure that out but I do have an answer for you.
You can try to educate yourself on proper nutrition from reliable sources (not just facebook or google)...
...or you can try the Take It Off Weight Loss Program (TIO) available at EFC .
This is not a fad diet otherwise I would not be a TIO weight loss coach.
This program helps you learn how to eat properly with real food.
