Take a Journey to Effective Weight Loss!
Last week I introduced you to the fact that you cannot out train a bad diet.
Yes we need to exercise to maintain a healthy body composition such as...
- Weight
- Lean Mass
- Body fat
...but exercise alone will not keep us at that weight we have always wanted to weigh.
We will talk more about exercise in the weeks to come but for now we first need to learn how to create a healthy mindset.
Let’s face it everyone knows that not exercising, eating junk food and smoking is not good for us.
So why the heck do we do it, why can’t we just stop?
We don’t have a healthy mindset. Life has happened to us creating habits and automatic feelings/reactions to certain situations.
We need to learn how to stop this and change the way we think about/see things.
In the next couple of weeks we will explore some ways you can do this.
I can tell you this will work but you have to be willing to work at and do your homework.
If you are ready to take this challenge then let the journey begin...
Mental Awareness = Noticing and naming the thoughts in your mind as they come up. Awareness is the very first step in this journey. We need to NOTICE our old, habitual thoughts and feelings BEFORE we can choose NEW feelings. It really is that simple! Of course, what is infinitely harder is turning those old, habitual feelings around in a positive way. So how to begin "noticing" your feelings? The best way is to catch yourself in the middle of ANY negative emotion such as...
How do you know if a feeling is negative? Because it makes us feel lousy. Many of us might, under normal circumstances, walk around in a haze of negative emotions all day long without even knowing it. That's fairly normal. But for our purposes on this journey, we need to recognize the times we are emoting negatively. For now, I want you to notice and name when the negative emotions arise. Perhaps for you it's first thing in the morning because you are irritated you have to go to a job you don't like. Or maybe it's late morning when you are starting to feel hungry for lunch. Think about it and write it down! It could be when you eat something you weren't planning on, and the cheat wasn't really even enjoyable. Or when your house is messy or the dishes aren't done. Go through your day and mentally assess those times, write them down in a journal. Ask why you are feeling that way? Are you angry with someone else? Yourself? A situation? Write it down. For me, I always experience more negative emotions when my daily routines get disrupted or when I am hungry. When I begin to feel that way, I try to be AWARE of it. Even if I don't want to change my attitude in that moment :) Sometimes we just like being mad or upset. Fine. But let's at least start being consciously aware of it. That's the first step... Once we become more aware, we can begin empowering ourselves to CHANGE those thoughts effectively to ones that make us feel better. So start practicing now and for the rest of the week. Please feel free to e-mail me your thoughts at jenn@efcfit.com and let me know how you are doing with this. Or if you just need to vent about something or have questions about this journey I am waiting to hear from you. Be ready to take the next step in your journey. Until then, have an AWESOME week! |
